RIFis Information Sheet: Understanding the Rupture of an Imagined Future and Opening Conversations

What is RIFis?

RIFis stands for the Rupture of an Imagined Future centred around infant sex.

RIFis, unhelpfully formally known as ‘gender disappointment’, refers to the complex emotional experience some parents may go through when their baby’s sex is not the one they had imagined or hoped for.

Although often misunderstood or rarely spoken about, RIFis can involve a wide range of emotions including sadness, grief, guilt, shame, anger, confusion, and emotional numbness. These feelings are often intensified following a scan or confirmation of the baby’s sex.

Despite being more common than many people realise, RIFis is frequently experienced in silence due to stigma, misunderstanding, and fear of judgement. This can leave parents feeling isolated at a time when support is most needed.

Why conversations about RIFis matter

Many parents experiencing RIFs do not feel able to talk openly about how they are feeling. There is often an assumption that they should and can just “get over it,” or that their feelings reflect something negative about their child, which is very often not the case, although some parents can experience challenging feelings around their children.

RIFis is better understood as a rupture of an imagined future where the sex of a child may have held deep emotional meaning, hopes, or expectations. And when reality does not match this imagined future, it can create a significant emotional distress that needs understanding and compassion.

Opening up conversations about RIFis with family, friends and healthcare providers can reduce shame and help parents feel less alone in their experience; enabling them to move forward.

How this information sheet can help

The information sheet you can now find on our free resources page is designed to support conversations about RIFis with friends, family members, and healthcare professionals. It provides a starting point where the conversation can begin.

Starting supportive conversations

If someone has shared this information sheet with you, they are likely showing great courage in expressing something deeply personal and may be seeking your understanding and support.

Here are some ways to begin the conversation:

1. Learn more

Take time to understand RIFis so you can better support the person sharing their experience. Reliable information can help you respond with greater compassion.

2. Validate their experience

You do not need to fully understand someone’s feelings in order to acknowledge them. But validation can be powerful, such as:

“I can see how difficult this is for you.”

“Thank you for trusting me with this.”

3. Listen with curiosity

Try to listen without judgement or assumptions. Open questions can help create space for reflection, such as:

“What does having a son or daughter mean to you?”

“How has this experience been for you?”

Allow them space to speak freely and at their own pace.

Final thoughts

RIFis can be a deeply emotional and often hidden experience. By opening up conversations with compassion, curiosity, and care, we can help reduce isolation and create greater understanding for those going through it.
